  • What is pediatric occupational therapy, and how can it help my child's development?
Occupational therapy focuses on the “occupations” your child engages in during the day. For kids, their “occupations” are playing, eating, getting dressed, brushing teeth, going to school etc. A pediatric occupational therapist (OT) works with children and their families to assess the child's strengths and challenges and develop a personalized treatment plan and goals to help them reach their full potential. OTs may use a variety of techniques including sensory integration, play-based activities, and adaptive equipment to help children build skills and confidence. Please see my blog post for What is OT? for a more detailed description!
  • How do I know if my child needs occupational therapy?
If you're wondering if your child may benefit from occupational therapy, there are a few signs to look out for. These can include delays in reaching developmental milestones, difficulty with fine motor skills like writing or using utensils, challenges with sensory processing or self-regulation, and difficulty with self-care tasks like dressing or grooming. If you have concerns about your child's development or have received a diagnosis that may impact their ability to perform daily tasks, a consultation with a pediatric occupational therapist may be beneficial. Please look under my infant and child services for a more detailed list of areas of concern.
  • What types of feeding therapy services do you offer, and how can they help my child?
Feeding therapy services offered by OT’s can help children who are struggling with eating and mealtime routines. These services can include evaluation and assessment of a child's oral motor skills, development of customized feeding plans, and use of techniques to address challenges like oral aversion, sensory issues, or difficulty with swallowing or chewing. Your occupational therapist will also work with families to develop strategies for creating a positive mealtime environment and supporting healthy eating habits.
  • What is sensory integration therapy, and how can it benefit my child?
Sensory integration therapy is a type of occupational therapy that focuses on helping children with sensory processing challenges. These challenges may include over- or under-sensitivity to sensory input, difficulty with sensory integration, and challenges with self-regulation. Sensory integration therapy can involve a range of activities aimed at helping children build skills in areas like balance, coordination, and body awareness. Sensory integration focuses on 3 specific sensory systems: vestibular input, proprioceptive input and tactile input. By helping children learn to process and respond to sensory information more effectively, sensory integration therapy can support improved behavior, social skills, and overall development.
  • How long does a typical therapy session last, and how often will my child need to attend?
The length and frequency of therapy sessions can vary depending on the needs of the child and the treatment plan developed by the occupational therapist. A typical session may last between 30-60 minutes, and the frequency of sessions may range from once a week to several times a week. The duration of therapy can also vary depending on the child's progress and goals. This is determined during the initial evaluation.
  • What qualifications and certifications do your therapists hold?
Our therapists hold a range of qualifications and certifications in occupational therapy and related fields. All therapists are licensed and registered in Arizona and have completed graduate-level education in occupational therapy. In addition, many of our therapists have specialized training in areas like sensory integration and feeding therapy.
  • What ages do you work with, and do you specialize in any particular conditions or disorders?
We work with children of all ages, from infants to adolescents. While we work with children with a variety of conditions and disorders, some areas of particular expertise include autism spectrum disorder, cerebral palsy, Down syndrome, developmental delays, and sensory processing disorder. We specialize in infant feeding and development, child feeding therapy (sensory-based approach), and sensory integration therapy.
  • What is the process for scheduling an initial consultation or evaluation?
If you are interested in scheduling an initial consultation or evaluation, the process typically involves contacting us through our contact page or email hello@ivegotyoubabes.org to schedule an appointment. During the initial evaluation, your therapist will meet with you and your child to discuss concerns and gather information about your child's developmental history and current challenges. Based on this information, the therapist will work with you to develop a personalized treatment plan and goals.
  • What types of payment options are available for therapy services?
We offer a range of payment options for therapy services, including private pay, HSA/FSA, and ESA. We also provide superbills at the end of each month that you can submit to your insurance for reimbursement.
  • How can I support my child's therapy at home between sessions?
Supporting your child's therapy at home can be an important part of their overall treatment plan. Your therapist will provide guidance and recommendations for activities and strategies you can use at home to help reinforce the skills your child is learning in therapy. This may include activities like fine motor exercises, core exercises, visual motor activities, feeding strategies, etc.
