As a parent, you want your baby to be healthy and happy. But sometimes, unexpected challenges arise. Two common conditions that can affect infants are torticollis and plagiocephaly.
Torticollis is a condition in which a baby's neck muscle is tight or shortened on one side, causing their head to tilt or turn to one side. Plagiocephaly is a flat spot on the back or side of a baby's head, often caused by spending too much time in one position. These conditions can sometimes occur together.
Torticollis and plagiocephaly can be caused by a variety of factors, including difficult or prolonged delivery, prematurity, and spending too much time in one position (such as in a car seat or crib). If left untreated, they can lead to problems with movement, vision, and development.
Fortunately, there is help available. Pediatric occupational therapy can be an effective treatment for torticollis and plagiocephaly. An occupational therapist can work with you and your baby to create a customized treatment plan that may include exercises, stretches, and positioning techniques. They can also provide guidance on tummy time and other activities to encourage your baby's development.
Getting help for torticollis and plagiocephaly early can make a big difference in your baby's development and overall health. If you suspect that your baby may have one or both of these conditions, talk to your pediatrician and consider contacting us for an evaluation to get started on your treatment plan today!
